LIMITED SNOW PROGRAMME
In the event of snow conditions being such that we cannot tour then here are some options we will use. The length of each session could be varied dependent upon:
- The severity of the lack of snow, or access to it if storm bound. That is, it may just be limited to Ciste Mhairearaid, the south side of Cairngorm, or patches at the level of the car parks
- The numbers wishing to attend
Ski Technique
This could be done on patches, in the Ptarmigan Bowl or the Lodge Mat.
These sessions may well be best run, discipline specific and with a view to off-piste techniques.
The Steeps
This could include the basics of how to cope with steep terrain on ski (and maybe off). Everything from how to recognise and avoid it; through falling with style; to the basics of steep ski technique. Possible venues include:
- Behind the Ciste Car Park
- Above the ski road
- Ciste Mhairearaid
- GL’s mat
Avalanche Avoidance for Ski Tourers
Sessions can be run indoors &/or out. They could vary anything from a basic lecture, through to a day done travelling on ski. This would also work on foot if need be.
Navigation on Ski’s
To include:
- Basic navigation (easy around the Lodge)
- The use of GPS
- Planning a ski tour in Scotland
- Altimeters
- Planning a tour abroad
Note. This session would dovetail very well with Avalanche Avoidance
