It’s like the purest of the pure, simple and no fuss.
With the gear being lightweight and easy to use more and more clients are noticing the fun that this sport can bring, from simply bashing around your local forest or Golf course to full on cut tracks and trails of the Norwegian ski resorts and more and more in the Alps.

Packages of cross-country kit can start as little as £130 for a set of Boots, Bindings and Skis, and like with any sport will go up in price as the technical spec improves up to around the £450. The sport is split into to disciplines and has specific equipment to match. They are Classical and Skate.
The Classical technique was the original style were you are striding out one foot in front of the other and majestically gliding from one foot to the other, covering the distance a lot faster than you can imagine. Even a beginner could cover up to 20km in a day given the right conditions. The skis are a lot longer than Telemark kit and much lighter, they are long and thin with no side cut and are purley designed to go in long straight lines.
The other technique is more explosive and dynamic it is the style of Skating. A relatively new style to the Nordic world, were the skier pushes the ski from side to side propelling themselves forward in almost the same style as an ice skater hence the name. The skies are much shorter than Classic skies so are easier to handle. Yes it's a little more physical and technical than classic but when you crack it can be fast, furious and fun!

Think about the following before coming to the store or contacting us as this will help you in your buying decision.
- Decide whether or not you want a classic, skate or combination ski. A waxable base over a non waxable base.
- A combination boot over an out and out skating boot.
- Jump onto the scales and check your weight in KG then whisper it to us. As this will determine the correct length of ski to use.
- Pole lengths are generally longer in skating and shorter in Classic style Nordic skinning, so we need to know your height to advise the correct length.
- Ensure that if you are purchasing new boots or already have boots that the boot and binding combination are compatible, for example NNN or SNS.
Fundamentally there are three types of Cross Country Ski Boot.
- The first being a skating boot which comes high up the shin with the sole unit being torsionallly stiff creating a platform for the skier to push against.
- Secondly combination boot which combines sufficient stiffness in the sole and comes high enough up the shin to allow you to skate, but soft enough over the toe to allow you to classical two phase, this proves to be the most popular setup for both skiing in Norway and the UK.
- Lastly a classic shoe, used purely for classical skiing and has a style almost to the same look as a conventional trainer. This footwear can only really be used for this technique so does have some limitations.
