Fast becoming the popular choice, for skiers, climbers and general outdoor folks as their main form of training when not on the mountain, trail running allows you to be in the environment they're comfortable with, as apposed to the confines of the local gymnasium.
It's not some sort of new fad, but simply a sport that has become more accessible to more people. It's the freedom and simplicity of the sport that appeals to so many people, so why not give it ago.

- If you can get your feet measured before purchasing your running shoes.
- Look at getting footbeds (Superfeet), put into the shoes they will help reduce friction, and promote correct body alignment.
- Keep the clothing as light weight and breathable as possible.
- If you're going on longer trails look at carrying some sort of hydration unit for example a Camelback.

Before making that vital buying decision take in to consideration exactly what type of terrain you are going to be running on the most. For example is it more mountains or fell, forest trail, or a mix of road and trail. As a general rule running shoes designed for Mountain use will often be ultra lightweight, provide very little heel cushioning but will have a very deep tread to give you maximal grip. A forest trail running shoe will generally be at home both in the forest or occasional use on the road. They will be slightly heavy than the mountain running shoes and with a lesser tread, however they will give you plenty of upper support and some heel cushioning.

It's a very similar principle when it comes to running clothing as it is to hillwalking kit, except it's a lot lighter and is designed for maximum breathability. Avoid cotton as this fabric sticks to the skin and takes ages to dry, cool max and Lycra are the sorts of things you need to be looking for. Thin and light layering if you're spending a long time out and single layer for a quick training session.
